In our country, Thanksgiving is a time we celebrate and appreciate those things we should be grateful for. We set aside a day out of our busy lives for quality family time; we eat a traditional meal of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. We might even take in a parade or watch football.
So what room of your home comes to mind when you think of that quality family time during the holidays? The kitchen of course! For hundreds of years families have gathered together in the kitchen cooking, preparing, laughing and just talking. During the holidays we spend a great deal of our quality time together in the kitchen.
Here at deWit Construction & Remodeling we know first-hand just how important your kitchen space is for your family, especially during the holidays! That is why it’s important to ensure your kitchen is designed to accommodate your plans for holiday family gatherings and meal preparation.
Kitchen designs are always changing and what’s “in” is always changing. From countertops to flooring, from appliances to fixtures, it is hard to know what your kitchen needs to fit your style! So what would make your kitchen the most functional and efficient for Thanksgiving and other family gatherings?
Two of the important items to consider are counter space and storage.
As we noted earlier, your kitchen is one of the most important and widely used living spaces in your home. So, it is here in the kitchen where you will want the highest quality fixtures, appliances, and even layout. People have learned the value of a dollar and when it comes to the kitchen it is best to invest in something that is going to last.
The cheapest isn’t always the least inexpensive in the long run.
If you are looking to redesign your kitchen, you will want to put that hard earned money into something that will hold up to heavy use and high volume traffic. For countertops, that means looking closely at the latest materials used:
Granite is currently one of the most popular used materials for countertops right now. It is a little pricey, but it’s easy to clean, heat and scratch resistant, and comes in many different colors and patterns. Granite is also low-maintenance and only requires an annual sealing to prevent aging.
Wood countertops look beautiful and are fairly inexpensive. You do have to be extra careful with wood countertops because they can be scratched or dented. If they are scratched or dented, you can have a professional sanded and seal it or repair it yourself.
Laminate material is the most affordable one out there at about $10 to $40 a square foot installed. Laminate countertops offer a number of design and color options and stand up well to use depending on the material. With laminate you get exactly what you pay for though, not all brands are heat or scratch-resistant and repair may mean replacing the countertop.
There are a number of other materials used for countertops:
- Paper Composite
As you consider what may be the best option for you, our team at deWit Construction & Remodeling is ready to provide you with the answers to your questions and can help your decision making with a “been there, done that” perspective.
We have never met anyone who felt like they had too much storage space. In fact, storage space is something you never seem to have enough of. In order to host big parties or family gatherings during holidays such as Thanksgiving, you need proper storage in order to accommodate the food to feed everyone!
Having a well-designed pantry will be one of your greatest features of your kitchen. Not only will you be able to buy more bulk items (which saves you money in the long run), but you will also be able to store small kitchen appliances that are not used on a daily basis.
There are such a wide variety of kitchen cabinets you can choose from to meet your specific style and needs. The most important part when designing your kitchen cabinet layout is making sure you use every space to its fullest potential. This is where a design professional comes in handy because many people pick a certain design/layout only to regret it later because of wasted and unusable space.
In my opinion, you can never have enough drawers. Just like with the cabinets, there are a number of styles and designs to choose from. The ideal kitchen would have many drawers of different widths and depths. One of my favorite trends in kitchen drawer design is the deep drawer with canisters and dividers built in so you can easily store and organize your utensils.
The ideal kitchen for Thanksgiving (or any event) would be functional, practical, and well organized.
